Sakuma Kichiro was a general of the Tokugawa Clan.

Biography[]

Kichiro was born to two peasants who were killed by the Tokugawa in a raid on a village in the Sakuma clan territory. The clan was destroyed, and the baby Kichiro was adopted by Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1600, Kichiro took part in the Battle of Osaka, the siege of the castle in order to apprehend the five-year old Toyotomi Hideyori. The child was taken away by the Western Army of Ishida Mitsunari, whom the Tokugawa were campaigning against. Kichiro and Torii Mototada were dispatched to take down the Uesugi Clan's villages in Echigo, resulting in the retreat of Uesugi forces from the Western Army. Then, Kichiro commanded the forces subduing the Tokaido Road, a vital trade route. After the battle, Kichiro learned of his parents' fate from a captured samurai, whom he then executed in disbelief. But at the Battle of Fushimi Castle, he was given the truth by Mototada. Kichiro, living with this horrible fact, nevertheless served the Tokugawa and evacuated the civilians. At the Battle of Sekigahara, he agreed to stay loyal to Tokugawa in time to finish the battle. Afterwards, he ran away on horseback to lead his clan again.
